▶ Strategic three-party MOU inked to accelerate smart shipyard innovation through global technological collaboration

HD Hyundai Robotics (CEO: Kim Wan-soo) has signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MOU) with HD Hyundai Samho and NEURA Robotics, a German specialist in cognitive robotics, to jointly develop and validate a quadrupedal humanoid robot tailored to shipbuilding environments.

The agreement was signed during "Automatica," the world's largest industrial automation exhibition held in Munich, Germany, and aims to collaboratively develop a cognitive quadruped robot capable of welding operations in in-shop shipyard environments, as well as verify its effectiveness and pursue commercialization.

The shipbuilding industry is currently grappling with a dual challenge: a shortage of skilled labor and high-risk working conditions. This agreement was established as part of an effort to create innovative technological solutions that meet such industrial demands.

Under the agreement, HD Hyundai Robotics will lead the performance verification and technical support of the robot, leveraging its accumulated expertise in welding automation and route learning data. The company will also focus on developing precision control technologies and automation algorithms tailored to the unique characteristics of shipbuilding work.

HD Hyundai Samho will provide the on-site validation environment using actual shipyard workspaces and assess on-site applicability and effectiveness. NEURA Robotics, known for developing humanoid robots such as the "4NE-1," will collaborate on developing and commercializing cognitive robotic technologies specific to shipbuilding applications.

Song Young-hoon, Executive Vice President of HD Hyundai Robotics, stated, "This agreement is a prime example of our welding automation capabilities combined with the technological expertise of a leading global robotics firm. It will significantly contribute to driving innovation in shipbuilding-specific robotic automation and securing future competitiveness across the industry."

Ryu Sang-hoon, Executive Vice President of HD Hyundai Samho, commented, "Through this agreement, we will realize specialized robotic technologies that fulfill both safety and productivity, taking the lead in establishing smart shipyards."

David Reger, CEO of NEURA Robotics, said, "The core of this agreement lies in proving the potential of cognitive robots in one of the most demanding industrial settings?shipbuilding. Together with HD Hyundai Robotics, we aim to set a new benchmark in industrial automation."

HD Hyundai Robotics added that this agreement will serve as a crucial stepping stone for accelerating the adoption of robotics throughout the shipbuilding sector and strengthening global supply chain competitiveness.
