HD Hyundai Robotics Leads Smart Shipyard Innovation with AI-Based Humanoid and Autonomous Logistics Technologies
2025-09-16 09:43:46HD Hyundai Robotics is spearheading the digital transformation of the shipbuilding industry through the development of AI-powered humanoid robots and autonomous logistics systems. In collaboration with HD Hyundai Samho and LG CNS, the company is accelerating the realization of next-generation smart shipyards and opening new frontiers in industrial robotics technology.
HD Hyundai Robotics participated in the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the development of humanoid and logistics automation technologies, held on September 15 at the panel plant of HD Hyundai Samho's headquarters in Yeongam.
The agreement outlines two key initiatives:
▲ Application of AI-based humanoid robots to shipbuilding processes
▲ Establishment of an autonomous logistics system using Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs)
HD Hyundai Robotics is responsible for developing motion control and artificial intelligence technologies optimized for shipyard environments.
HD Hyundai Robotics is currently developing AI-based robotic solutions tailored to the complex and precise working conditions of shipyards. These solutions are designed to automate high-risk and high-precision tasks such as welding, measurement, forming, and monitoring--tasks that traditional collaborative robots find difficult to perform. By leveraging its expertise in precision motion control and industrial AI robotics, the company is laying the foundation for advanced automation in shipbuilding.
In addition, HD Hyundai Robotics possesses a wide range of proven robotic solutions already deployed in shipyard environments. The company is actively commercializing next-generation technologies, including AI-based vision recognition, real-time control of multi-joint robots, and sensor fusion technologies for safe human-robot collaboration.
This agreement goes beyond simple technology development. It aims to accelerate the digital transformation of the shipbuilding industry and enhance global competitiveness. HD Hyundai Robotics plans to establish global standards for industrial AI robotics by integrating LG CNS's AI and data convergence platform with HD Hyundai Samho's real-world testing environment.
Kim Wansoo, CEO of HD Hyundai Robotics, stated,
"This collaboration will serve as a milestone in proving that industrial robots can automate even the most complex shipbuilding processes. Through AI-based robotics, HD Hyundai Robotics will enhance both safety and productivity in the shipbuilding industry and pioneer a new paradigm in industrial AI."
Shipyards are high-risk industrial environments involving high temperatures and elevated workspaces. The adoption of automation technologies is essential for ensuring worker safety and improving productivity. HD Hyundai Robotics is responding to these industrial demands by offering integrated solutions that combine AI humanoid robots, autonomous logistics robots, and smart monitoring systems.
Since establishing its Automation Innovation Center in 2022, HD Hyundai Samho has been leading the transition to smart shipyards by introducing equipment such as underwater hull cleaning robots and collaborative robots to replace high-risk tasks. This latest agreement is expected to further accelerate that transformation.
